Everything covered on this site — condensed into a short, free book. How deficiency happens, what detox looks like, and how to start restoring what our bodies have been missing.
Why Supporting Nutrients?
Iodine doesn't work in isolation. When we supplement with iodine, our bodies require additional nutrients to properly utilize it and manage the detoxification process that follows. Without these co-factors, we may experience more intense detox reactions or suboptimal results.
The Iodine Protocol, developed by Dr. David Brownstein and refined by the iodine community, identifies the key nutrients that support iodine therapy. These nutrients help protect the thyroid, support detoxification pathways, and ensure our bodies can effectively use the iodine we're providing.
Starting these nutrients 1-2 weeks before beginning iodine can help prepare our bodies. Continuing them throughout the iodine journey tends to support optimal results.
Essential for detox and mineral balance
Unrefined salt provides essential minerals and chloride, which helps our bodies eliminate bromine and other halides released during iodine supplementation.
1/2 teaspoon per day in water, increasing as needed during detox
Thyroid protector and T4 to T3 converter
Selenium is crucial for thyroid health, protecting the gland from oxidative damage and enabling the conversion of T4 to the active T3 hormone. However, selenium is a nutrient that demands attention — even 200mcg daily causes some people to go toxic. If we can't clearly feel a difference when we pause and resume it, we probably shouldn't be taking it every day.
200mcg as needed — not necessarily daily. Pause periodically and see if resuming makes a noticeable difference.
Selenium toxicity is real and happens at doses many people consider "normal." Even 200mcg daily is too much for some of us. Symptoms include garlic breath, hair loss, brittle nails, fatigue, and nausea. Don't take any nutrient daily on autopilot — pay attention to what our bodies are telling us.
The relaxation mineral involved in 300+ reactions
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in our bodies and is commonly deficient. It supports energy production, muscle relaxation, and nervous system function.
400-800mg daily, split into 2-3 doses for better absorption
Magnesium can stack up in individuals with weaker kidneys, like those who smoke for example. This can lead to elevated levels that cause acute magnesium overdose. Magnesium also requires other electrolytes in order to function and buffer properly — it doesn't work well in isolation.
Antioxidant and adrenal supporter
Vitamin C supports adrenal function, enhances immune health, and acts as a powerful antioxidant. It also helps improve cellular transport of iodine.
2,000-5,000mg daily in divided doses
Energy production and metabolism support
Vitamins B2 (riboflavin) and B3 (niacin) are essential for ATP production and cellular energy. They support thyroid hormone activation and overall metabolism.
B2: 100mg 3x daily | B3: 500mg 2x daily (as niacinamide to avoid flush)
Not all salts are created equal. Learn which types support iodine detox and which to avoid.
Special Protocol
A specific technique for accelerating bromine and halide detoxification when experiencing symptoms.
Dissolve 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of unrefined salt in a small amount of warm water (a few ounces).
Drink the salt water, then immediately follow with 12-16 oz of plain, filtered water.
Repeat every 30-45 minutes until symptoms improve or urination increases noticeably.
The chloride in salt helps kidneys excrete bromine, often providing relief within a few hours.
Note: Salt loading is for acute detox symptoms, not daily use. Those with high blood pressure or kidney issues should consult a healthcare provider before salt loading.
