Iodine is one of the most potent natural antimicrobials. Many people use it to support gum and tooth health.
Iodine has been used as an antiseptic since the 1800s. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa — making it one of the broadest-spectrum antimicrobials known. Unlike antibiotics, bacteria do not develop resistance to iodine.
The mouth is home to over 700 species of bacteria. While many are beneficial, an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria contributes to cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and systemic inflammation. Diluted Lugol's solution used as a mouth rinse can help keep this microbial ecosystem in balance.
Before modern antibiotics existed, iodine was a primary tool in medicine. Surgeons used it to prevent infection. Dentists used it to treat gum disease. It was standard practice — and it worked. The shift away from iodine in dentistry had more to do with the rise of fluoride marketing than with any failure of iodine itself.
In the early 1900s, iodine was a staple in dental offices. Dentists used iodine solutions to disinfect surgical sites, treat abscesses, and manage gum disease. Povidone-iodine (Betadine) rinses were standard pre-surgical protocol for decades.
Even today, povidone-iodine mouth rinses are used in some hospitals before intubation to reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Studies consistently show that iodine rinses significantly reduce oral bacterial loads — including the bacteria most responsible for cavities and periodontal disease.
The community has taken this historical and current medical use and applied it practically: a simple Lugol's mouth rinse used regularly, combined with overall iodine repletion, to support oral health from both the outside and inside.
The thyroid and dental health are connected in ways most people never consider. Thyroid hormones regulate bone metabolism, including jawbone density. They affect saliva production — and saliva is the mouth's primary defense against cavities, providing minerals and antimicrobial compounds.
When thyroid function is low, saliva production often decreases, leading to dry mouth. Dry mouth dramatically increases cavity risk because the protective mineral bath that saliva provides is reduced. Gum tissue healing slows. The immune response in the mouth weakens.
Many people in the community report that chronic dental problems — receding gums, frequent cavities, slow healing after dental work — improved significantly as they restored iodine levels and thyroid function normalized. The mouth is thyroid-sensitive tissue.
Fluoride in toothpaste and water is marketed as essential for dental health, but fluoride competes with iodine at the cellular level. Many in the community have switched to fluoride-free toothpaste and report no increase in cavities — especially once iodine levels are restored and saliva quality improves.
Using Lugol's as a mouth rinse is simple and inexpensive. The key is dilution — straight Lugol's is too concentrated and can stain. A few drops in water creates an effective antimicrobial rinse without the harsh chemicals found in commercial mouthwashes.
Basic Lugol's Mouth Rinse
Add 2-4 drops of 2% Lugol's to 2-3 ounces of water. Swish vigorously for 30-60 seconds and spit. Can be done 1-2 times daily.
Direct Gum Application
For inflamed or problem areas, apply a single drop of Lugol's directly using a cotton swab or clean finger. The concentrated iodine provides targeted antimicrobial action.
Post-Dental-Work Rinse
After dental procedures, a Lugol's rinse can support healing and reduce infection risk. Wait until any active bleeding has stopped before swishing.
Daily Oral Supplementation
Many people find that simply taking iodine orally as part of the protocol improves oral health over time as tissue iodine levels throughout the body — including the gums and salivary glands — are restored.
Oil Pulling with Iodine
Some add a drop of Lugol's to coconut oil for oil pulling. Swish for 10-20 minutes first thing in the morning. Combines the antimicrobial benefits of both iodine and coconut oil.
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is not just a dental problem — it is a systemic inflammatory condition. The bacteria that cause gum disease enter the bloodstream through inflamed gum tissue and have been linked to heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's, and preterm birth.
Chronic gum inflammation is both a cause and a symptom of systemic inflammation. When the immune system is constantly fighting oral pathogens, it diverts resources from other tasks. This is why dental health is considered a window into overall health.
Addressing oral health with iodine works on multiple levels: the mouth rinse reduces pathogenic bacteria directly, oral supplementation supports thyroid function and immune regulation, and improved saliva production creates a naturally more hostile environment for harmful bacteria. It is an inside-out and outside-in approach.
Oral health is just one of many areas where iodine plays a role.
